Michael Jackson’s This Is It is a 2009 American concert film documenting Michael Jackson’s rehearsals of the concert series of the same name, both on stage and behind the scenes. The film will comprise of Jackson mentoring his team for the 50 shows, as well as him creating, developing and ultimately staging the high-tech performances. The footage was filmed at The Forum and the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It is set for worldwide theatrical release on October 28, 2009 with a limited two-week run. Tickets go on sale a month early, on September 27, 2009 to satisfy a high anticipated demand. On August 10, 2009, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Mitchell Beckloff approved a deal between Michael Jackson’s estate, concert promoter AEG Live and Sony Pictures. This allows Sony Pictures to edit hundreds of hours of rehearsal footage, mostly shot at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Sony paid $60 million for the film rights. The film will contain behind the scenes footage of Jackson backstage, on stage and directing his team as he created his fifty shows. It will also contain interviews with friends of Jackson and 3-D sequences originally filmed as part of the concert performance. Candid and private scenes involving Jackson and his crew have been confirmed. The DVD/Blu-ray release will contain the theatrical version in its entirety and a second DVD/Blu-ray disc containing over 2 hours of Jackson performing, warming up his vocals and performing in full costume. On Tuesday, MTV announced that Janet Jackson would be opening up the show with a tribute to her late brother Michael (which is already inspiring speculation and expectations among fans). The latest news is that Sunday’s broadcast of the VMAs will contain the premiere of the trailer for “This Is It,” the film that incorporates rehearsal and performance footage from the shows that were supposed to make up Michael’s scheduled 50-date residency at the O2 Arena in London. The film hits theaters on October 28 and will only be around for a limited two week engagement, but this Sunday’s VMA show will be the first chance anybody has to check out footage from the movie. Of course, this isn’t Michael’s first foray into film. Many of his music videos are quite cinematic (as well as long enough to be considered shorts), but he has also appeared in a number of proper film projects. In his youth, there was his stint as the Scarecrow in “The Wiz.” There was also his guest appearance on “The Simpsons,” his cameo in “Men in Black II” and his Stephen King-penned TV movie “Michael Jackson’s Ghosts.” But the highlight of his cinematic career (although one that “This Is It” will almost certainly top) is “Captain EO,” his 17-minute 3D movie he created for the Disney theme … |
